Media Stories
Media Stories draws on visual traditions found in print and broadcast media, cinema, internet, and 18th - 19th Century European painting. The photographs navigate the slippery slope between real and imagined worlds, with the acting as ghosts of archetypes past and present, playing out an historical narrative with roots in consumption.
Photography is unique in its ability to record with exacting detail the elements of a scene. Paradoxically it has equal power to record fictitious scenes. With this series I am questioning what is real in the media we consume.
I am asking viewers to evaluate their roles in reading the photographs which are purposely ambiguous in mood. While I have constructed the scenes based on images I've seen before, I put the elements together in such a way so the ability to identify a particular time period is sometimes obscured. I'm interested in the idea of history and how as humans we repeat patterns of behavior, even though they are at times destructive.
A dramatic palette and multiple presentation techniques reference different traditions within visual communication and art. I wish to make a connection between visual traditions of the past and those of today.
